Healthy Start was a Presidential initiative to reduce high infant mortality. Detroit was one of 13 sites to be funded through the federal Health and Human Services Department to address this initiative. Working with many people at the WSU Institute of Maternal and Child Health I designed a pre-natal care booklet, a series of educational outreach modules, a series of pre-conceptional brochures.

These modules, carried in binders that fold-out to stand on a table, were the text and the visual aids for health care advocates who visited the homes of clients. The modules and the advocates provided educational information on family planning, prenatal care, childbirth, and care for newborns through one-year-olds. Each topic in each module had a client page (with pictures and simple text with some words that functioned as images for ease in remembering concepts) and an advocate page (which followed the points of the client page with detailed explanations and dialogue prompts). Printed as photocopies (40 copies for the Detroit staff) – September, 1995.

Designed and printed for national distribution (500 copies) – July, 1998.
Modules were grouped into four sets  – prenatal and postnatal care, infant care and feeding, infant growth and development, reproductive health – that are interchangeable with a tabletop stand. Preparation and production of the modules was funded by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. $30,000

An example of an advocate and client page from the module, “How to Bathe Your Baby,” is contained in the following PDF.
