Mothers’ Feelings in Pregnancy and Postpartum (M-FIPP) smartphone app prototype 2011 This smartphone app prototype was designed to help women identify and seek help for symptoms of postpartum depression. On the basis of information from focus groups of mothers and healthcare professionals and from documented studies, the most important support for women suffering from postpartum depression is to be able to talk with someone about their feelings and experiences. Thus the app is designed to enable a woman to talk with someone from her personal and healthcare professional support network within three screen taps. The specific content of the app – its wording, ease of use, and visual components – was developed based on the responses of our focus groups and the tested with the focus groups. The app is intended to be adaptable to digital tablets. The material and sequence of information found in the app is also available in print form as a 3-panel brochure. I designed the focus group materials and the all prototype materials. The development of all these materials was funded by the following grants for “Developing a Doula Intervention for Postpartum Depression and Maternal Responsiveness.” I was a co-investigator with Dr. Judith McComish (PI) and Dr. Carla Groh (co-investigator, University of Detroit Mercy). International Society of Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurses, Hertha Gast Research Award; $1500 for prototype materials Sigma Theta Tau, International Honor Society of Nursing – Lambda Chapter (Wayne State University); $2000 for conducting focus groups.
The content of the app was also designed as a 3-panel, 2-fold brochure. Feedback from the focus groups on content, shown with the brochure, was presented at the national American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA) conference in 2011 and data related to the focus groups was visualized at a presentation about the designs at the International Society of Psychiatric Nurses (ISPN) conference in 2012. The app design, brochure design, feedback from the focus groups, and data visualization relating to the focus group information is contained in the the following PDF.
